What skills are covered in each level?

We match swimming students based on ability and age.  

Following are the skills that are covered in each level.  

 

Level 1:  Introduction to Water Skills

 

Enter and exit water using ladder, steps, or side

Submerge mouth, nose, eyes

Blow Bubbles- mouth & nose- 3 sec

Bobbing- w/support 3 times

Retrieve object- eyes open, 2 times

Front float supported; back float supported - 5 seconds (relaxed)

Change direction walking or paddling

Roll from front to back and back to front with support

Recover to a vertical position, w/ support

Tread water using arm and hand actions (explored)

Alternating and simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back, w/ support- 2 body lengths

Combined arm and leg actions on front and back 2 body lengths

 

Level 2:  Fundamental Aquatic Skills

 

Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping  from side

Submerge entire head 5 seconds

Bob 5 -10 times (rhythmic breathing, fully submerging, no stopping between bobs)

Retrieve objects with eyes open underwater 2 times

Front, jellyfish and tuck floats unsupported - 5 seconds

Front glide 2 body lengths

Back float unsupported - 15 seconds

Back glide 2 body lengths

Recover from a vertical position

Change direction swimming on front or back-unsupported

Roll from front to back and back to front independently

Kick on side with support

Tread water using arm and leg actions  15 seconds

 

Level 3:  Stroke Development

 

Jump into deep water (and return to wall independently)

Head first entries from the side in a sitting or kneeling position

Bob 10 times (rhythmic breathing, fully submerging, no stopping between bobs) moving towards safety of shallow end

Rotary breathing (breath to the side for front crawl - 10 breaths)

Flutter and Dolphin kicks on front  3-5 body lengths

Survival float deep water - 30 seconds

Back float deep water - 30 seconds

Change from vertical to horizontal and back to vertical in deep water

Tread in deep water - 30 seconds

Front crawl 15 yards

Elementary backstroke 15 yards

Scissors kick 10 yards

 

Level 4:  Stroke Improvement

 

Compact or standing dive

Swim under water 3-5 body lengths

Feet first surface dive

Survival Swimming 30 seconds in deep water

Front open turn & glide 2 body lengths

Back open turn & glide 2 body lengths

Tread deep water 2 different kicks for 2 minutes using breaststroke, scissor, or rotary kick

Front crawl 25 yards

Back crawl 15 yards

Breaststroke 15 yards

Butterfly 15 yards

Elementary back stroke 25 yards

Side stroke 15 yards, with or without support

Flutter and dolphin kicks on back 3-5 body lengths

 

Level 5:  Stroke Refinement

 

Shallow dive, glide 2 body lengths, begin any front stroke

Surface dives - tuck & pike

Approaches for flip turn - front and back

Tread water - 2 different kicks - 2 minutes

Front crawl 50 yards

Butterfly 25 yards

Breast stroke 25 yards

Back crawl 25 yards

Elementary back stroke 50 yards

Side stroke 25 yards

Sculling 30 seconds

 

Level 6:  Swimming and Skill Proficiency, Personal Water Safety

 

Front crawl 100 yards

Back crawl 50 yards

Breast stroke 50 yards

Side stroke 50 yards

Elementary back stroke 100 yards

Butterfly 50 yards

Front crawl open turn

Back crawl open turn

Butterfly, Breaststroke and Side stroke open turn

Front flip turn

Back flip turn

Survival Swimming  10 minutes

Treading water, kicking only, 2 minutes in deep water

Surface Dive and retrieve an object from bottom of deep end
