Current swim class schedule and prices in Nassau County
The list below is the live course schedule from Nassau County Swim School, showing
start dates, levels, times and prices for sessions that are open right now. Weekend classes fill first, so if a Saturday
or Sunday slot suits you, book it early in the session rather than late.
What lesson formats are available?
Four formats cover almost everyone who walks in:
- Parent and Tot. For the youngest swimmers, with an adult in the water for each child. The goal is comfort and safe habits around water, not strokes.
- Private. One swimmer, one instructor, for the whole lesson. The fastest way to fix a specific problem or to settle a genuinely frightened swimmer.
- Small group. Capped at three swimmers matched by level, so nobody spends the lesson holding the wall waiting for a turn.
- Swim team prep and water aerobics. Run by Swim and Scuba for stronger swimmers and for adults who want low impact conditioning.
How do swim class levels work?
Swimmers are placed by what they can do on the day, not by age. A five year old who is happy putting their face in the
water and a nervous nine year old who has never floated need different lessons, and putting them in the same class helps
neither. Levels progress from water comfort and floating, through independent movement and breathing, to recognisable
strokes, turns and distance. If you are unsure, say what the swimmer can currently do and the school will place them.
Where the lessons are held
Learn to swim sessions are taught at Pierce Country Day, 37 Mineola Ave, Roslyn, NY 11576, which is also where the
lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes run. Swim and Scuba runs its own swim sessions, swim team
prep and water aerobics separately, so call if you want those rather than a learn to swim session.
Private or group?
Choose a private lesson if the swimmer is frightened of the water, has had a bad experience, is on a
deadline such as a holiday or a swim test, or needs one specific thing corrected. Choose a small group
if the swimmer is reasonably willing, enjoys company, and you would rather spread the same budget across more weeks.
Many families start private until the swimmer is comfortable, then move to a group to keep going.
What happens in the first lesson
The first lesson is mostly assessment. The instructor sees how the swimmer enters the water, whether they will put
their face in, how they float, and what they do when they are out of their depth. Expect a slower first session, and
expect a young or nervous swimmer to be tired afterwards. Bring goggles, a towel, and for the youngest swimmers, swim
diapers, which are required.

Frequently asked questions
How old does a child have to be to start swim classes in Nassau County?
Lessons start in the Parent and Tot format from around six months old, where an adult is in the water with the child. From roughly three or four years old, children swim with an instructor rather than a parent, in a private lesson or a small group matched to their level.
Are group classes or private lessons better?
Group classes suit swimmers who are comfortable taking turns and learn well alongside others, and they cost less per session. Private lessons suit nervous swimmers, anyone with a specific goal such as a stroke correction, and adults who would rather not learn in front of a class. Group sizes here are small, so the gap is narrower than at pools that run large classes.
Do I need to book a whole session, or can I take single lessons?
Lessons are sold as a multi-week session rather than one at a time, so the same swimmers and instructor stay together and progress is continuous. The live schedule shows how many weeks each current session runs.
What if we miss a week?
Ask before you book, because make-up policies depend on the session and how full the classes are. Call (718) 954-5567 and check rather than assuming.
