Where are the pools for Suffolk County swim classes?

Being straight about geography saves everyone a wasted trip. There is no Suffolk County pool in this programme.
Lessons are taught at Pierce Country Day, 37 Mineola Ave, Roslyn, NY 11576. North shore Suffolk towns such as
Huntington, Melville and Commack have the shortest run; from the south shore, Amityville, Lindenhurst and Babylon are
the closest starting points.

Is the drive worth it?

Sometimes, and it is worth being honest about when. If you want a straightforward learn to swim class and there is a
decent pool ten minutes away, take the local one, because the lessons you actually attend are the ones that work. Travel
west when you want something specific: a genuinely small group rather than a class of ten, a private instructor for a
frightened swimmer, a session time that fits around work, or a swim school that also certifies lifeguards and instructors
if that is where the swimmer is heading.

Lesson formats

  • Parent and Tot. An adult in the water with each child, for the youngest swimmers.
  • Private. One swimmer with one instructor, which is the format most Suffolk families choose when they are travelling, because it gets the most out of each trip.
  • Small group. Capped at three swimmers of similar level.
  • Swim team prep and water aerobics. For stronger swimmers and for adults who want low impact work.

How do swim class levels work?

Placement is by current ability rather than age. The progression runs from water comfort and floating, through
independent movement and breathing, to strokes, turns and distance. Tell the school what the swimmer can do now,
including anything that frightens them, and they will place the lesson accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Do you run swim classes inside Suffolk County?

No. Lessons are taught at Pierce Country Day, 37 Mineola Ave, Roslyn, in Nassau County. Families from western Suffolk travel to them, which is why this page exists, but we will not pretend there is a Suffolk pool.

How far is the drive from Suffolk?

From the Suffolk border towns such as Amityville, Lindenhurst, Deer Park, Huntington or Melville, Roslyn is usually a thirty to forty five minute drive outside rush hour. Times vary a lot with traffic, so plan the first trip with extra time.

Is it worth travelling for swim lessons?

It depends on why you are travelling. For a general learn to swim class, a local pool you can reach easily every week usually beats a better pool you dread driving to. For a nervous swimmer, a specific stroke problem, or a small group cap you cannot find nearby, the drive is often worth it.

Can we do fewer, longer trips instead of weekly lessons?

Swimming rewards frequency more than length, so weekly lessons over several weeks beat occasional long sessions. If weekly travel is not realistic, ask about private lessons, where progress per lesson is usually faster.

What about lifeguard certification for Suffolk residents?

Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes are listed separately, including a Suffolk County schedule. See the lifeguard and instructor class pages linked below.
