Where does the Nassau County Water Safety Instructor course run?

Water Safety Instructor courses are taught at 37 Mineola Ave in Roslyn, the same pool as the lifeguard classes.
The course is longer than a lifeguard class and includes teaching practice, so expect several sessions rather than a
single weekend.

Bring a swimsuit you can demonstrate strokes in rather than swim laps in, and something to write with. A good part
of the course is lesson planning on paper, not in the water.

Who usually takes the WSI course in Nassau?

Most candidates already work around water: lifeguards who want to move from guarding to teaching, swim school
assistants who need the qualification to run their own lessons, and parents or coaches who have been teaching
informally and want the certification behind it.

Nassau has a dense mix of swim schools, town pools and day camps, so instructors who can teach beginners are in
steady demand rather than seasonal demand. That is the practical difference between this and a lifeguard
certificate: the work is less tied to the summer.

What the course covers, and what you need first

The stroke standard you have to demonstrate, the course structure and what the certification lets you teach are
the same at every location. They are set out on the
Water Safety Instructor class page for Long Island.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Nassau County WSI course taught?

At 37 Mineola Ave, Roslyn, NY 11576, the same pool used for the lifeguard classes.

Is WSI the same as a lifeguard certificate?

No. A lifeguard watches water and responds to emergencies. A Water Safety Instructor plans and teaches swim lessons. They are separate qualifications and many people hold both.

Is instructor work seasonal in Nassau?

Less so than guarding. Swim schools and town pools run lessons through the year, so instructors tend to find steady rather than summer-only work.

Can our swim school certify several instructors at once?

Yes, that is arranged directly rather than through the public calendar. Call (718) 954-5567.
